Title: Drawing 54: A Pair
Artist: Ernest Trova
Country: USA
Work Date/Period: 1954

Description: Easily recognizable Surrealist influences, gleaned from figurative works by Jean Dubuffet and Wiliam de Kooning prevail in Trova's 1940's and 1950's early work. Trova infuses the first of his 1954 drawings with a surrealist vocabulary of playful forms and graffiti-like pictographs. His treatment of the second, a Dadaist related approach, incorporates a calligraphic script of running artists names on parchment applied to and set against an interactive painterly ground. Gem-like in stature and somber in tone, both works can be likened to the widely acknowledged, monumentally important intimate oeuvre of Mark Tobey.
